Wood..oh wait..stone..
Stone carved to look like wood is one of my favorite things in a cemetery..thought I'd share some of my favorite pics thereof.

Lil stumpy thing 'growing' out of the stone base, taken at Mountain Home Cemetery in Kalamazoo, MI:

This is the only one I've ever seen that looks like stacked logs (back view):

Tree/cross hybrid, taken at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Battle Creek, MI:

I love the ivy around the trunk & the weird branchy-thing going on at the top (closeup of the weird branchy thing)..taken at Oak Hill Cemetery in Battle Creek, MI:

Book leaning against a log - taken at Pilgrim Home Cemetery in Holland, MI (front view):

Stump, also taken at Pilgrim Home..the detail amazes me, with the bark peeling away from the stump (back view):

Also, I hope the mods don't mind if I mention this here (checked the user info & didn't see any rules against it), but for those of you over on Dreamwidth, I made a group there called Cemetery Photos, so if you have an account over there, stop by & share some pics. :)

x-posted..sorry if you see this more than once!

I used to work for a cemetery, and we had a lot of tree/log/branch headstones like these. The overwhelming majority of those stones belonged to deceased members of the Modern Woodmen of America fraternal insurance agency. The log-shaped stones symbolized "woodmen." Not sure if you're familiar with the Modern Woodmen, but one of their primary functions in the late 19th and early 20th century was this: members would pay dues and pool money together to help cover death and funeral costs for each other's families. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean the headstones in your pictures are MWA headstones, but the 3rd, 4th, and 6th pictures, especially, remind me of MWA headstones.

That must've been an interesting job. :)

Yep, I have quite a few pics of WOW (Woodmen of the World) headstones in my collections, & have seen many more similar stones (after you've seen many that basically look the same, the need to photograph them all starts to subside). A good chunk of the ones I've seen also had the WOW name or logo (or both) as well as the oft-seen 'Dum Tacet Clamat' carved in the stone along with the other info. Not sure if any of these stones were actually WOW stones..I'll have to check the other shots I took of them. :)
